Domestic workers often endure exploitation in silence—facing low wages, lack of dignity, and strained employer relations. In response to their struggles, St. Ann’s Society launched the Domestic Workers’ Welfare Programme in Rajam in 2012, focusing especially on widows and women living in vulnerable conditions, many of whom suffer abuse due to their husbands' alcoholism.
Recognizing the urgent need for collective action, we partnered with Montfort Social Institute (MSI), Hyderabad, to strengthen the movement. As a result, 405 domestic workers have been formally registered under the Domestic Workers Federation of Andhra Pradesh, gaining access to rights and legal protections.
A milestone was achieved on 30th November 2022, when the group was officially recognized as the Asha Jyothi Domestic Workers Union-Rajam, through a Certification of Registration of Trade Union, marking a new era of empowerment and collective bargaining for these unsung women workers.

In Jalaripeta, Visakhapatnam, St. Ann’s Society works independently among domestic workers to ensure their dignity and rights. The formation of the “Visakha Nava Jeevan Domestic Workers Union” on 2nd April 2019 marked a significant step toward organizing and empowering these women.
With 105 active members, the union holds regular monthly meetings that provide a platform for support, awareness, and solidarity. Many members have also joined Self-Help Groups, enabling financial independence and mutual support.
These meetings focus on educating workers about government welfare schemes, boosting their confidence and helping them access benefits they are entitled to. The aim is to further strengthen and expand this impactful programme for a better future.
